DOKA (Depth of Knowledge Assessment) is an International Mathematical Problem-Solving Competition held annually around the globe. It is jointly organized by SMO Education Group, Academy TeamMathics, Singapore International Math Contests Centre (SIMCC), and supported by Scholastic Trust Singapore (STS).
Many may not be aware that Reasoning Skills is one of the most important elements in Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS). Reasoning is the action of thinking about something in a logical, sensible way and to derive an answer to a problem by considering possible options.
DOKA provides a healthy competitive platform for students in Year 1 to 13 (Primary 1 to A-Levels) to assess their HOTS and IQ ability among their own year level group. Parents and teachers can also take this opportunity to assess their children and students BEFORE they attempt more challenging math competitions or IQ tests in future.
DOKA is SPECIAL. It provides a range of interesting variation in questions to spark students’ curiosity and encourages them to think outside the box and invoke their love for math! An Opportunity for All. DOKA exposes students to the various types of Reasoning Skills and this gives them the opportunity to explore and the confidence to take part in more challenging math competitions and start scoring “A*”s in Math.
Reaching Greater Heights. DOKA helps students to be comfortable with various mathematical problem solving in the right environment. DOKA wants students to utilize this experience to continue to take part in more challenging Math Olympiad Competitions in the future.
DOKA is SPECIAL and unlike any other math olympiad/competitions. It comprises FOUR parts:
Part A: Basic Reasoning – Apply information or conceptual knowledge, usually using one method for a single problem with multi steps.
Part B: Intermediate Reasoning (Non-Verbal) – Understand and analyze visual information.
Part C: Advanced Reasoning – Require creative thinking for strategic planning on a sequence of multi steps, usually combining 2 or more heuristics for a single problem.
Part D: Extended Reasoning – Require critical thinking to interpret complex information, to find the hidden data/ pattern, then make necessary connections to smoothen the problem-solving process (Math Olympiad type).
DOKA is designed based on Depth of Knowledge in Mathematical Problem Solving. With realistic and highstandards, DOKA aims to expose more students to mathematical problem solving and invoke their love formath. It will help them improve in school math as well as higher order thinking skills (HOTS).With the solution manuals which will be available after the contest, students can learn creative heuristicmethods recommended to solve complex mathematical problems, as well as, knowing their strengths andareas for improvement.
What are Depth of Knowledge Questions?
There are 6 papers in total:
